UNFINISHED PRESENT features the culminating work of San José State University interdisciplinary student-artists from the Fall 2020 BA Senior Project Class. Spanning two virtual, interconnected exhibition platforms—New Art City and Kunstmatrix Gallery—UNFINISHED PRESENT draws its initial inspiration from Sara Ahmed’s writings on the ongoing work of anti-racism and decolonization. The title further situates the student’s projects within the many unfinished aspects of this “unprecedented moment”—systemic racism, the inequitable impact of COVID-19, a tumultuous election transition, climate change, and their unfolding role as emerging artists and creative practitioners.
Drawing upon a wide range of media and conceptual strategies (often without practical studio facilities and resources) each student developed a way of working that served their own particular needs, questions, and concerns—from self-care and connection with others to practical goals, creative survival strategies and/or a focus on decolonization and identity. In this way, each student turned to the process of artmaking to discover (and exercise) potentially resilient ways of seeing-in-action as a vital extension of lived experience.
